EUFIC
Overview
EUFIC (The European Food Information Council), is a non-profit organisation based in Brussels that stands up for science-based information on food and health through accessible, appealing and actionable information on food and health to inspire and empower people to make better decisions about diet and lifestyle.
EUFIC’s mission is to make complex scientific knowledge accessible, engaging and actionable — empowering people across Europe to make informed decisions about their diet and lifestyle.
Their audience spans a broad spectrum, including health professionals and researchers, journalists and media organisations, policymakers and industry stakeholders and the general public.
The Brief
EUFIC required a new website that could support a vast and continually growing body of content, while remaining accessible to a diverse audience.
The scale and complexity of the project presented several key challenges, including:
- managing and organising thousands of articles across 13 languages
- presenting scientifically detailed content in a way that remains accessible to non-specialist users
- enabling users to quickly find relevant information within a large and complex dataset
- balancing the needs of professional audiences with those of the general public
In addition, the platform needed to support a wide range of content formats, from long-form articles to multimedia resources, while maintaining a consistent and intuitive user experience.
The Process
We approached the project as a content-first platform design challenge, focusing on structure, accessibility and scalability. Working in collaboration with the EUFIC team, we began with a series of workshops to define key audience groups and their needs.
From this, we developed:
- detailed user personas representing different audience types
- user journeys to map how people navigate and consume content
- a clear content structure to organise large volumes of information
This strategic foundation allowed us to identify potential friction points early and design a platform that works effectively for both expert and general audiences.
Design & User Experience
A key priority was making complex information easier to understand and navigate.
We focused on:
- creating a clean, intuitive interface that supports content discovery
- introducing a strong visual system, including a distinctive illustrative style
- structuring content to improve readability and engagement
- ensuring consistency across languages and content types
The design balances clarity and visual appeal, helping users engage with detailed information without feeling overwhelmed.
Platform Development
Given the scale of EUFIC’s content, search functionality became a central feature of the platform. We developed a powerful search system that allows users to quickly locate relevant articles, topics and resources across languages and formats.
Additional features include:
- the ability to save, share, print or export content as PDFs
- support for multiple content formats, including webinars, videos, podcasts and infographics
- flexible content structures to support ongoing publishing and expansion
- a fully responsive design for seamless access across devices
The platform was built to scale, ensuring it can continue to grow alongside EUFIC’s content and audience.
The Result
The result is a modern, content-driven platform that successfully balances scientific depth with accessibility.
- A clear and structured approach to managing large volumes of content
- A user-friendly interface that supports both specialist and general audiences
- A strong visual identity that enhances engagement
- A scalable platform designed for long-term growth
- A centralised hub for a wide range of content formats
Results & Impact
The new platform has significantly strengthened EUFIC’s ability to deliver its mission.
- Over 1 million visitor sessions per month, reflecting strong and growing engagement
- Improved content accessibility, making scientific information easier to understand
- Enhanced discoverability, through powerful search and structured navigation
- Greater audience reach, across multiple countries and languages
- A trusted resource, increasingly recognised as a leading source of information on food and health
Most importantly, the platform enables EUFIC to continue empowering people across Europe with reliable, science-based information.
“We had been putting off re-doing our website for years as it was a daunting task with our thousands of pages and 13 languages. We eventually took the plunge and started tendering. When we first talked to Framework Design, we immediately felt we were in safe hands. They helped us both with the restructuring of our material as well as finding clever technical solutions to our needs. It’s been a delight working with Cameron and Ciaran. They are so professional and patient. We warmly recommend Framework Design!”
